For breakfast, our host Matt filled us up with omelets made from fresh eggs from the chickens and pancakes filled with fresh blueberries Kerry picked yesterday. Thank you, so much, to Matt and Kerry for opening your home to us! Once we packed up the bikes, Matt, Kerry, Herbie and Laura gave us a bike escort out of the neighborhood as we found our way back to the ACA route.
Despite tweaking my ankle playing soccer with Herbie yesterday, it didn’t feel too bad this morning. I was careful clipping in and out of my right pedal, but riding my bike wasn’t a problem. I felt good all day, it wasn’t too hot and the road was rolling hills which I found easier than the sustained steep hills we saw in Pennsylvania, New York and Connecticut. Today we saw more cyclists than we’ve seen the entire trip because we fell in with a cycling club doing a century ride. It was nice to see a bunch of roadies, even when they blew right by us.
We stopped for a roadside lunch of peanut butter sandwiches in Harvard, MA and found a bike shop that just happened to have the Specialized Body Geometry saddle that Alan wanted to put on his bike for a great price. When we set out this morning, we made a plan to stop at a campground near Littleton, MA, about 20 miles into the ride. But we left ourselves the option to push on further if the ride was going easily. Both Alan and I felt pretty good after our break in Harvard and a Google search suggested there might be campgrounds near Tyngsborough. But a few phone calls revealed that we were out of luck for tent camping and wouldn’t be able to find another Warm Showers host at the last minute. With a little more searching we found a good deal at Motel 6 in Nashua, NH and decided to ride all the way across the state line today. Forty-three miles is the longest ride we’ve done in a over a week, but I was pleased with how I felt all day. The hills weren’t demoralizing, it wasn’t brutally hot and humid or buggy. I’m tired, but not completely spent from riding, and that feels pretty good.
Alan sneakily adds: Caroline didn’t include the cutest picture of the day, her on her new bike:
