We woke to steady rain this morning, so rather than cooking breakfast outdoors, we headed into Lake Placid for breakfast at the Downtown Diner. The weather forecast was for rain all day, so we spent some time researching rainy day activities as we sat in the diner. First we visited High Falls Gorge. It was barely misting when we set out to walk along the Gorge, but ended raining fairly hard. We ducked into the cafe for hot chocolates and planned our next activity.
We drove up Veteran’s Memorial Highway to the top of Whiteface Mountain. Although it was rainy and socked in with mist, the drive to the top was kind of fun. There’s a “castle” several hundred feet below the summit. Then you have to walk through a long shaft dug into the mountain to reach the elevator that takes you to the summit. On top of Whiteface, there is a weather station and some interpretive information about the Adirondacks. No views for us on this day, but we did have fun exploring.
When we finished at Whiteface, we drove back into Lake Placid for an early dinner at a Thai restaurant. It was still raining after dinner, so we headed back to camp. Enormous puddles awaited us in our campsite, so we retired to our tents to wait out the rain until tomorrow.
