Day 79: More Miles on the Rail Trail

40.88 miles

This morning we woke up to rain, so we lazed around in the tent until the storms cleared off to the east. When we finally got up, we moved a lot of our gear under the pavilion so we would have a dry place to organize and pack up.

Yesterday I bought some Bisquick Instant Pancake Mix at the market so we could have pancakes for breakfast. This mix worked out better than I could have hoped and we really enjoyed our breakfast. Look at this tiny little short stack! Without butter or syrup, we dolled up the pancakes with a little dab of Nutella. Super!

As we were packing up, a pair of swans landed in the creek by the pavilion. Quite lovely!

We finally headed out of the campground and the city of Clare around noon, quite a late start for us. Today we rode to Reed City, to stay with a Warm Showers host. Although the paved Pere Marquette trail ended in Clare, we picked up another west-bound Rail Trail that took us all the way to Reed City. I’m pretty impressed with the cycling options in Michigan, and it would be fun to explore more of the state by bike, especially the Upper Peninsula, which we won’t see on this trip.

We made it to Marcia and Darin’s house and got settled. Marcia had a meeting, so we walked to the supermarket to pick up veggie burgers and macaroni salad—a nice change. When Marcia and Darin came home we sat around chatting about bike touring. Marcia just finished riding the Pacific Coast and Darin is planning to ride the Great Divide next year. It was fun to trade stories with them for a while before heading off to bed.
