Ah, a rest day. How we were looking forward to relaxing and taking in the sights of Astoria, Oregon. We slept in kinda late, which might have been our first mistake if we were hoping to get any sightseeing done today. We went downtown for a “quick” brunch which ended up taking much too long and before we knew it the morning was almost gone. Crap! And we still had to get some laundry done today. We went back to our motel to get our bikes and ride the couple miles to the nearest laundromat. Along the bike path I was careless and smacked one of my panniers into a wooden post and broke part of the mounting hardware. Double crap!!
While we did our laundry I called the local bike shop to see if they had any panniers in stock that might work. They said they might and so after our laundry was done we stopped by the bike shop. The pannier I broke is one of our open top grocery basket type panniers. We each have one which we usually use to carry a waterproof backpack. This gives us the convenience of having a small backpack while keeping gear to a minimum. I’ll write a longer blog post in the future about this pannier/backpack combination. Unfortunately the bike shop didn’t have anything I wanted to buy, but the guy there did help me out with a small piece of metal I could use to patch things up.
Next stop: hardware store for some small nuts and bolts. Caroline also had to hit up a pharmacy to renew a prescription and then I had to stop by the bike shop one more time for some new socks for Caroline and a small bottle of chain lube. Finally I got back to the motel to work on patching the pannier mounting hook. I think I got it fixed up ok, but by then it was dinner time so we got some take out food and worked on planning our route for the upcoming days. I feel bad that we didn’t have more time today to see the sights in Astoria. We considered staying an extra day, but the long term weather forecast is predicting a lot of rain next week so we’re eager to keep heading south. Oh well, Astoria is a nice town so hopefully we’ll come back through here again.
