We’ve enjoyed our stay here on Cat Ba Island and in Vietnam in general. We wouldn’t have minded staying longer in Vietnam, but it’s time we moved on. We’ll probably be flying back to the U.S. in mid-July so it’s about time we get to Europe and see as much of it as we can before then. With a last look over the harbor from our $12 hotel room, we began our long day of travel.
I won’t bore you with all the details, but it took about 8 hours just to get from Cat Ba Island to the Hanoi Airport. It’s a good thing we got an early start or we might have missed our plane! While we were in Hanoi we opted to walk from where the bus dropped us off to the airport shuttle office. That gave us a brief look around the streets of Hanoi. It looks nice, but typical of cities we’ve seen in Vietnam. I’m glad we extended our time on Cat Ba Island instead of coming here for a couple nights.
And so, after an overnight flight and after more than 24 hours from leaving Cat Ba, we arrived in Venice! Why Venice, you may ask? Because our friends, the Rosen family from Rochester, are in the middle of a whirlwind week traveling northern Italy. We decided that Venice would work best to meet them for a day or two of their trip.
Venice looks just like it does in the movies. I know that’s a cheesy thing to say, but it’s true. The canals are ridiculously scenic with all the old buildings crammed together along the water’s edge and the many boats going to and fro. After we got settled in our Airbnb apartment we spent a while wandering the narrow streets of Venice, getting lost and soaking in the sights. Tomorrow the Rosens arrive and we’ll see more of the city with them.
